Every year I get excited searching for gifts. I love shopping for my family! I love the joy in their expressions as they tear into their presents. I admit it I stand in line on Black Friday, shop all those crazy sales, and even buy last minute gifts a week before Christmas. However, this year I noticed my kids don’t really need one more toy. Not one more book, game, or even piece of clothing is necessary. So while I am shopping away I wondered what else could I give them…………..
Of course in pondering this I also am watching my friends with their amazing elves. The elves that creatively do everything! The wreathes that are hand made and perfect, bows, and decorations galore all done with Christmas cheer. Oh and don’t forget all the baking: breads, pies, cookies, and creative miracles ensue! Its all quite overwhelming to me.
So as I sit back an ponder what to decorate, how to do it, and when to find the time. I am burdened by cookies that need baking, and presents that still need to be found. Oh the season is enough to drive a person to distraction. Wait…………DISTRACTION…………………..The Devil would like to see us busy being busy………….Not busy doing God’s work………………….What am I doing?
Maybe I need a change of perspective. Maybe I need to think about the greatest gift of all, Jesus. What about giving a gift to Jesus. It is his birthday. Matthew 25:40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
So I stopped amid the hustle and bustle and asked myself what perfect gift could I give. You see I am his hands and feet and I know that the gifts I give no matter how large or small can change the world. Jesus will use my gifts as a testimony of his greatness. There are so many to give. I can give my time by volunteering and helping others.
Or I could feed the children of a village in Uganda while buying beautiful necklaces for friends and family. For $19.95 I get a handcrafted necklace made by a mother whose only wish is the gift of enough food to feed her starving children. For less than 20.00 I give her the gift of hope and a future.
Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Aren’t these chicks adorable. Or would you prefer a bunny?
A lamb, a goat, a water buffalo, or even a camel are all possibilities. These are life giving gifts that you can give through an organization called gospel for Asia. By giving these presents you provide food and a livelihood to families who have nothing. These aren’t the only options that gospel for Asia offers though. You can also buy someone a water filter for less than 20.00. You give the gift of clean water. You can also buy a loom, a sewing machine, or an embroidery machine. Your small gift really does change a life forever, a family’s life, or in some cases a whole village.
James 1:27Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
Or you can shop the show hope catalog and help a family bring a child home.
So this Christmas season before you get busy being busy take a moment to shop for Jesus. What gift will you give to further his kingdom? Who will you save? Who will praise God because of you? They will say because of you my life is forever changed.
My challenge to you is give a little will really mean a lot!
